Footwear
The right shoe matters
- Take the shoe’s own insole out first. Never put orthotics on top of another insole.
- Wear them in the type of shoe your clinician recommended.
- Lace-ups with a firm heel counter and enough depth hold them best.
- Slip-ons and very flat pumps often won’t hold an orthotic well.
- Different shoes for work and sport? Ask your clinician about a second pair.
Looking after them
Printed in PA11 nylon. Built to last with a little care.
Do
- Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap
- Air dry at room temperature
- Spot-clean fabric top covers gently
- Check the top cover for wear now and then
Don’t
- Submerge or machine wash them
- Dry them on a radiator or in a tumble dryer
- Leave them in hot cars or strong sun
- Try to reshape the shell with heat
Keep up your exercises
Orthotics are one part of your treatment plan, not a replacement for the strengthening and stretching your clinician prescribed. Lasting improvement usually comes from both together.
Need a second pair?
Your scan and prescription are kept on file, so a pair for work shoes, trainers or travel can usually be made without a new scan. Ask the clinic that prescribed yours. Worn top covers can also be replaced without a new shell.
Questions
Common questions
How long does it take to break in custom orthotics?
Most people build up to full-day wear over about three to four weeks, starting with one to two hours a day and increasing gradually. Follow any schedule your clinician gave you.
Is it normal for new orthotics to hurt?
A mild ache in the arches or legs during the first week or two is common while your body adapts. Sharp or worsening pain is not normal: take them out and contact your clinician.
Can I move my orthotics between shoes?
Yes, as long as each shoe has its own insole removed and suits the orthotic. Many people order a second pair so they don’t have to swap.
How do I clean my orthotics?
Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, then air dry at room temperature. Never submerge them, put them in a washing machine or dry them on a radiator.
