Patient Guide: Custom Foot Orthotics – Instructions for Use

About Your Orthotics

These orthotics are custom-made medical devices, designed using anatomical impressions of your feet and ankles taken by a prescribing clinician and manufactured by Réalta Labs.

They are intended to:

  • Alleviate pain in the feet, lower limbs, and lower back

  • Improve function by correcting biomechanical issues

  • Prevent future injuries when worn consistently

  • Be used in footwear, directly under the foot, and are made for the exclusive use of one individual

Fitting Your Orthotics into Shoes

  1. Identify Right and Left labels on each device.

  2. Insert into suitable footwear. If tight, remove the shoe’s existing liner.

  3. Choose shoes with adequate volume and support for best comfort.

💡 Tip: Orthotics work best in supportive footwear such as trainers or walking shoes with removable insoles.

Wearing Schedule: Getting Started

To ensure comfort and proper adaptation, follow this gradual schedule:

Week 1

  • Days 1–3: Wear for 1 hour/day while standing or walking.

  • Add 1 hour each day from Day 4 onward.

  • Avoid sports or strenuous activity during this phase.

Week 2

  • Gradually introduce light physical activity.

  • By the end of the second week, aim for full-day wear.

Key Reminders

  • Mild aches or fatigue in your feet, legs, hips, or back are normal initially.

  • Orthotics are designed for daily use and multiple years of wear (typically 3–5 years).

  • Never share your orthotics or wear someone else’s – they are custom-made for your foot shape.

Cleaning & Care

DO:

  • Wipe clean with a warm, damp cloth

  • Let air dry completely

  • Wear socks or stockings with your orthotics

  • Use talcum powder under orthotic if squeaking occurs

DO NOT:

  • Submerge in water or machine wash

  • Expose to excessive heat (dryers, radiators)

  • Use harsh cleaning agents

Maintenance & Lifespan

  • The shell maintains its function over time, but top covers and padding may compress with moisture and use.

  • Refurbishment services are available. Contact your prescribing clinician if your orthotics appear worn or less effective.

When to Seek Advice

Stop using your orthotics and contact your prescribing clinician if:

  • Symptoms persist or worsen

  • New pain, discomfort, or blistering occurs

  • Devices feel ineffective or damaged

Important Notice

These devices are non-sterile Class 1 medical devices and are intended for use only by the individual for whom they were prescribed. Misuse or sharing may result in injury.

For further questions, concerns, or refurbishment requests, please consult your prescribing clinician or clinic.
